PBR Example

What Is PBR?

Physically Based Rendering (or PBR) is a way game developers can simulate the interplay between materials and light in a way that simulates reality. It is the combination of these two technologies in a real time gaming environment that make it possible for developers to deliver high quality realistic imagery.

Textures Are What Make Models Look “Right” To Us

We can give objects a texture that can have details such as reflective, bump, shadow detail and emissive properties to make up an amazing looking object or character. This opportunity allows developers to not only simulate reality, but provides more stylistic choices for the artists developing the worlds.

Game Engines Like Unity Use PBR To Make Recipes

First, the PBR system is made possible with a material generating Shader within the game engine. This Shader allows artists to combine image maps and setup parameters to cultivate a recipe for each material type.

Second, lighting in the past was difficult to achieve realism, but we now have access to Global Illumination or GI in a real time game engine such as Unity 5.  Global illumination makes it possible to light your entire scene with a single light source. Global or indirect illumination are algorithms used in 3D computer graphics – both real time (3D Games) and non real time such as (Shrek) that produce realistic lighting to 3D scenes. These algorithms not only produce the light which can come directly from a single light source, but can simulate the reflected light by other surfaces in the scene. These are known as Direct and Indirect Lighting and help bring the Shader of an object to life.
